Northern Vietnam and central loop adventure 11 days 10 nights

From the lowlands of Tonkin to the wild and remote province of Ha Giang, this itinerary passes through the country’s diverse ethnic cultures and natural landscapes, including lakes, rivers, jungles, rice fields and dizzying mountain heights. Mr Linh's Adventures has designed this North-Eastern loop to provide an intimate and authentic encounter with Vietnam.

Day 1
Ha Noi - Mai Chau (160Km/4 hours)
Northern Vietnam and central loop adventure, Mai Chau
We leave Hanoi early to reach our first destination, driving on small secondary roads, winding along forests and valleys. The landscapes become wild once we pass Thai Nguyen city. We’ll have lunch on the road, before arriving in Cho Ra in the early afternoon, where we’ll take a boat waiting for us at Buoc Lom harbour. We then continue by visiting the village of Ban Cam, inhabited by people of the Tay and ethnicity located right on the bank of the river. Afterwards, the boat will take you to Dau Dang, also a Tay village, where we’ll spend the night by the waterfalls at the house of our friend Ong Pirate, the chef of the jungle.

Day 2
Mai Chau - Son La (180Km/6 hours)
Thai village in Mai Chau
Today we have a full day to enjoy the National Park. We start in the morning by going for a walk along the Nang River until we reach the waterfalls of Dau Dang. Here we once again board our boat to cross the river, and set out on a trek through the hills visiting several villages inhabited by H’mong, Dao, and Tay people. Once we reach the shores of Ba Be Lake, we board another boat which will take us to Coc Toc Village for lunch and a rest. We’ll have dinner and spend the night here at Mr Linh’s Homestay, situated in a traditional Tay stilt house.

Day 3
Son La - Than Uyen: (160Km/6 hours)

We start with an early departure with a long and beautiful ride ahead of us. We’ll be following a small, easy road which recently replaced the dirt road and the scenery changes as we climb the mountain and gain altitude. Once we reach the pass at the top, you’ll find there is no traffic at all, making for a very peaceful ride. We then go through the territory of Black Tay, Dao, H’Mong, San Chi, and the Lo Lo ethnic groups, and depending of the day of the week, we can visit the ethnic market of Bao Lac.

Day 4
Than Uyen - Sapa ( 130km/4 hours)
Northern Vietnam and central loop adventure, on the road
Today we get to enjoy one of the most stunning rides in Vietnam, along the Chinese border. We’ll pass through many incredible mountain passes, valleys, and ethnic territories, all contributing to a mystical atmosphere and a sense of travelling through another time entirely.

Day 5
Sapa - Bac Ha - Xi Man ( 160 km/5 hours)
Northern Vietnam and central loop adventure, Sapa
The fifth day will have equally spectacular views. We’ll cross passes, vast valley estates, and a wide range of cultures such as Hoa, Pu Peo and Phu. This leg also provides a great opportunity to see remnants of French and H’mong architecture, such as the H’mong Castle. Like the previous day, the atmosphere is decidedly mystical, and we end the day in a hotel in Ha Giang.

Day 6
Xi Man - Ha Giang ( 150 km/6 hours)
Northern Vietnam and central loop adventure, Ha Giang
Today we’ll cover a short leg passing through Cong Troi Pass, where we’ll be sure to leave plenty of time for vista-gazing. In the afternoon we’ll have enough time to trek around the Hoang Su Phi countryside, discovering its secrets and mysteries. We’ll have dinner and spend the night in a lodge, where meals are served set to a gorgeous view of the forest river and gardens.

Day 7
Ha Giang - Dong Van ( 150 km/6 hours)
Northern Vietnam and central loop adventure, Ma Pi Leng pass
We’ll travel across sealed roads where the diverse landscape changes every 15km we go, and the variety of cultures is no less diverse. There are 12 separate ethnic groups living in the area, among them the Tay, Cao Lan, flower H’mong and Lo Lo. Once in Bac Ha we spend the night in a hotel.

Day 8
Dong Van - Meo vac - Bao Lac ( 120 km/4 hours)
Northern Vietnam and central loop adventure, Bao Lac
The morning and early afternoon is free to explore Bac Ha, before we have lunch and set out on the road again. We’ll cross small hills covered in tea plantations and karst mountain peaks before reaching Luc Yen in the afternoon, where we’ll enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 9
Bao Lac - Ba Be ( 120 km/4 hours)
Northern Vietnam and central loop adventure, Ba Be lake
If we didn’t have the time or energy the day before, we can spend the morning ascending the hills to a Red Dzao village and meet some of our local friends, or if you prefer, we strike out directly by setting of on a beautiful small road, still surrounded by limestone peaks and palm trees. Riding through foothills and along the lakeshore, we eventually reach the village of Vu Linh, where we’ll be welcomed to the stilt home of our Dao Quan Trang friends, situated right on the lakeshore. Time permitting, we can rent a boat to go for a cruise of the lake, and enjoy probably the nicest sunset of the whole trip.

Day 10
Ba Be Lake ( Visit and relax)
Northern Vietnam and central loop adventure, Discover Puong cave
Today we go west to Tuyen Quang, and then north to Green Vietnam, an ecological project managed by a dynamic Vietnamese agricultural family. We will sleep in a stilt-house in the heart of an extraordinary garden of fruit trees. It’s a great opportunity to discover and participate in the development of a unique project in Vietnam.
