The Dien Bien Phu
Battlefield is not only an emotional reminder of the brutal war but also symbolic of Vietnam's fight for Independence from France. It has become a popular place for historians to discover more about Vietnam's past.
Ha Noi - Mai Chau Valley - Home-stay (L, D)
You will be collected from your hotel at 08:00 to begin the journey through the infamous traffic of Hanoi and out into the countryside. Heading towards Hoa Binh Province, you will drive along passes and down into valleys, winding your way downhill to Mai Chau Valley. You will spend the afternoon here walking around the two connecting villages, learning about the Thai culture. You will spend the night having dinner and chatting with the local people followed by a traditional performance and a taste of local rice wine. You will have a peaceful night nestled in the valley with only the soothing sounds of nature around you.
Mai Chau - Son La (B, L, D)
After breakfast with a local family, you will leave Mai Chau for the drive to Son La stopping over half way in Moc Chau Town where you can taste the local speciality of sweetened milk cake. You will arrive in Son La late in the afternoon. Here you can uncover the town's dark history with a visit to the Prison Museum which remains as a poignant reminder of the inequities of the former French colonial rule. You will have dinner and spend the night at the Cong Doan Hotel.
Son La - Dien Bien Phu (B, L, D)
You can enjoy breakfast in your hotel followed by a trip to the colourful market of Thuan Chau. You will then visit a Blue H’mong Village on Pha Din Pass, followed by lunch in Tuan Giao. You will then travel to Dien Bien Phu the infamous site of a vicious battle between the French and the Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh. The French had planned to defeat the Viet Minh by luring them into the valley but were instead defeated as General Giap had placed the Vietnamese artillery on the surrounding ridges. You will stay overnight in Muong Thanh Hotel.
Dien Bien Phu Battlefield - Muong Lay ( B, L, D)
Today will be packed full of history as you visit some of the most significant relics of Vietnam's war with France, including A1, C1 hill, De Castres's Bunker and the Muong Thanh Airfield. Your tour guide will be able to tell you all about the campaign against the French. After a day discovering the area's turbulent past, you will return to the hotel for lunch Come back to the hotel, have lunch and depart for Muong Lay in the afternoon.
Dien Bien Phu - Ha Noi (B, L)
After breakfast, you will check out of the hotel and go back to Hanoi, travelling along winding mountainous roads with tremendous views. You will stop for lunch in Son La before completing the return journey to Hanoi, arriving in the late afternoon.
